Amnesia is a condition that is used to often on soap operas and in films that it can start to seem like it doesn't really exist in real life. But, the truth is that this is a very real thing that affects thousands of people every year. Some cases are caused by an injury - like falling down the stairs in Ajax homes or getting into a car accident - while others might be brought on by a mental disorder or post traumatic stress. If you'd like to know more about this complicated health issue than here are some of the basics to get you started.

There are two main types of amnesia. These are anterograde and retrograde. The first is the loss of short-term memory. If you were to get a concussion from playing in an Ontario hockey tournament, for example, you might forget the moment it happened and a few minutes before and after that. When this condition becomes serious it can mean that you're not able to remember something long enough for it to be transferred into your long-term memory where it could stay. This means that if someone told you several times where they live in condos Toronto you might never be able to retain that information.

Retrograde amnesia is the more well known of the two and affects pre-existing memories. With this condition the person would be able to absorb and hold onto new information but would be at a loss when it comes to some or all of the things that happened to them before they were inflicted with this condition. Sometimes these people are able to eventually recall the information that they have lost and other times it is gone from their memory forever.

There are many places in the brain where memories are stored and because of this you usually don't forget everything when you suffer from even the most severe cases of amnesia. While you might not be able to remember the gyms Scarborough to Mississauga that you worked at as a personal trainer you might still remember how to do all of the training exercises that you would complete with your clients, for example. Someone might lose all of their personal memories but still be able to speak another language fluently.

The most common causes of amnesia are from trauma or from mental issues. Some people might repress a memory that they find painful without even conscious knowing that they have done so. Others have memory issues from birth or develop them later in their life. They affect people in different ways and you cannot predict how they will affect one person's memory over another. One might be able to still manage seasonal investing but can't find their house while others might lose skills more than knowledge.
